Sara
Lee - The corporate mascot for the Sara Lee Corporation. Their mascot is
based on Sara Lee Lubin, the daughter of Charles W. Lubin, a bakery entrepreneur
who pooled his resources ($700) with his brother-in-law in 1932 and purchased a
small chain of bakeries called Community Bake Shops. When Lubin later introduced
a new line of cheesecakes, he (on the advice of his wife, Tillie) decided to
name his new cheesecakes after his eight-year-old daughter, Sara Lee. And, from
the beginning, Lubin insisted his product "had to be perfect" because they bore
his daughter's name.
The secret of his bakery products was in his manufacturing method in which he
completely froze his baked products after they come out of the oven - thus
guaranteeing freshness.
In January 1950, Lubin organized as the Kitchens of Sara Lee. In 1956, his
company was purchased by Consolidated Foods who later changed their name to the
Sara Lee Corporation in 1985. Today, the Sara Lee Bakery Group is a division of
a larger Sara Lee Corporation whose expanded product lines include such
categories as packaged meats, coffee, tea, underwear (Hanes), intimate apparel,
body care, air care, shoe care and air fresheners.
