ACT Awards - In 1972, the medal watch dog group
Achievement in Children's Television award began presenting the
ACT Awards for significant achievements towards improving
children's television programming. The Action for Children's
Television (ACT) was formed in 1968 by Peggy Charren and a group
of concerned mothers and houswives from Newton, Massachusetts
who wanted to eliminated violence and other negative behavior
seen in the wasteland of children's Television. Shortly after
Congress passed the Children's Television Act of 1990, the
Action for Children's Television group closed. Peggy Charren,
the founder of ACT, left the organization suggesting that now
was up to individual citizens' groups to police the airwaves.
