Rupert Giles is a Watcher. Born in England to a family of Watchers, Giles attended Oxford University and later became a museum curator. He is single, awkward around women but a brilliant occult researcher and demonologist.

For a time, Giles rejected his family's role in the Watcher community and instead began to dabble in the occult. During these rebellious younger years, his occult friends [Ethan Rayne among them] called him “Ripper.” But after summoning an evil demon named Eyghon, Giles was knocked to his senses and accepted his destiny as a Watcher [those who train and guide Slayers to destroy demons].

The Watcher Council assigned a now willing Giles to a Slayer named Buffy Summers who lived in Sunnydale, California. Under the guise of the school librarian, Giles instructed Buffy on the ways of the Slayer. Giles was later fired from the Watchers' Council for interfering in the “Cruciamentum,” a dangerous Slayer right of passage test which Buffy was required to take. The Council sent pompous Wesley Wyndham–Pryce to replace Giles as Buffy's Watcher, but Giles still supervised Buffy's affairs and eventually regained his standing as her Watcher.

Some of the occult reference books used by Giles included the Pergamum Codex, complete prophecies about the Slayer's role in the end years written by a medieval prophet Aurelius [it foretold the death of Buffy at the hands of The Master in the “Prophecy Girl” episode]; The Black Chronicles filled with more Slayer prophecies; and Malleus Maleficarum, a book on demonic possession. If Giles has need of other reference materials he can obtain like an original Guttenberg Demonography owned by a friend.

Researching Demons

"This world is older than any of you know. Contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise. For untold eons demons walked the Earth. They made it their home, their... their Hell. But in time they lost their purchase on this reality. The way was made for mortal animals, for, for man. All that remains of the old ones are vestiges, certain magicks, certain creatures...The books tell the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood. He was a human form possessed, infected by the demon's soul. He bit another, and another, and so they walk the Earth, feeding... Killing some, mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind. Waiting for the animals to die out, and the old ones to return. " -- Giles

Besides his knowledge of the occult, Giles other talents included fencing, playing the guitar, speaking five languages, [his British accent is quiet proper] and enjoying cross-referencing as a hobby. For light reading, Giles subscribes to Motorcycle and Scooter Magazine. In the fall of 2000, Giles opened an occult supply shop called “The Magic Box.”

Giles' romantic interests included computer science teacher Jenny Calendar [she got killed by Angelus the vampire] and Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers [they had sex on top of a police car while under the spell of enchanted candy]. Giles also has a girlfriend named Olivia who visits occasionally from England.

In May of 2003, Giles participated in the apocalyptic battle between good and evil as the town of Sunnydale (a.k.a. "The Hellmouth") was totally obliterated - nothing left by a huge crater in the ground. Giles escaped the apocalypse with his charge Buffy Summers and both presumably are still fighting evil somewhere in the USA. (possibly Cleveland, rumored to be another Hellmouth - a portal to all that is evil).

TRIVIA NOTE: Anthony Stewart Head was born on February 20, 1954 in Camden Town, North London. A talented singer and guitarist, Head performed in the rock band called 'Two Way' and sang on the musical episode "Once More with Feeling." that aired November 6, 2001 on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. He lives in Somerset, England with his long time girlfriend Sarah Fisher and their two daughters Emily Rose and Daisy May. Head's family includes his father, Seafield Head, a documentary filmmaker; Helen Shingler, an actress; and Murray Head, his older brother..

Before his stint as Giles the Watcher, Anthony Stewart Head portrayed a handsome apartment dweller in a series of popular TV commercials whose romantic involvement with another women in his building revolved around Taster's Choice Coffee (called Nescafe Gold Blend in the UK). In 2000, rumors of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off called WATCHER (or RIPPER) starring Rupert Giles was reported in a number of sources like the London newspapers, The Sunday Times and The Observer, but the new anxiously waited BBC show has yet to surface.
