Making Important Decisions

Topic:

Some people say that a person should make important decisions alone. Others believe that it is always better to ask others for advice. Which opinion do you agree with?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

SAMPLE ESSAY

I know several people who never make important decisions without asking others for their advice. That is definitely not my style. I prefer making important decisions all by myself for two reasons.

To begin with, I always try to do the right thing. I can decide what is right without anyone else’s help so long as I base my decisions on acting morally. Recently, some of my friends were going to watch a movie after school. I really wanted to go with them, but I also knew that I should go home and study for my final exam. So, I decided by myself to leave and go home. It was the right thing to do, and I knew that. Nobody else had to tell me how to act.

Another reason why I make all my important decisions by myself is that asking too many people for advice leads to conflicting opinions. [Supporting details] Often, when a person asks two people for advice, he or she gets two answers recommending opposite actions. And these conflicting opinions tend to make it harder to reach a decision. I have had this exact situation before. I could not decide between trying out for the basketball team and joining the band. So I asked my two best friends. One said to play basketball; the other said to join the band. They both supported their answers with good reasons. It was hard choosing between their recommendations. I would have been better off not even asking for advice and just going with what I felt was right.

I truly believe people should make decisions by themselves. They do not need to ask others for advice as long as their decisions are moral. Also, they will get too many differing opinions by asking others. I make all my difficult decisions alone, and I’m better off for doing so.
